Julius Berger is the leading construction company in Nigeria, what is your stance on sustainability?

Julius Berger believes sustainability is of vital importance. As a company that seeks to make outstanding contributions to construction technologies, building processes, operation and maintenance, Julius Berger views sustainability as a tangible way to deliver progress within the construction sector.
Sustainability involves many issues that we believe are key to showcasing the performance of our services, including design, materials performance, construction technology, HSE and the adherence to ethical standards.
As Nigeria’s leading construction company, we have ensured that our teams are ready to deliver the technical knowledge, innovative concepts and the Nigeria-specific know how to deliver sustainable construction-related solutions.
Accordingly, Julius Berger has been one of the first companies in Nigeria to plan and construct “green” buildings.

You currently have three building projects that qualify for green building certification, what prompted the shift towards “green” or environmentally friendly building?

Correct, during the last years, Julius Berger has successfully designed and built several buildings in Nigeria according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines that qualify for certification.
However, there was no shift towards “green”

building per se, as Julius Berger is a player in the global market and has therefore been familiar with the concept of sustainability for years
We believe that these pioneering projects set a strong example of the possibility to deliver sustainable design and construction in Nigeria.

Why do you think an environmentally friendly stance is important in the area of construction?

We believe that an environmentally friendly stance is important across all sectors and industries.
There are various statistics regarding the amounts of energy and water consumption of buildings in different countries. And in some of these countries, the construction industry has come under a great deal of criticism and there has been a massive drive towards promoting sustainable construction.
While here in Nigeria, sustainable or “green” building has not become a significant legislative issue, Julius Berger believe sit is important that contractors harness the benefits of acting in a sustainable manner and provide the right solutions to make it possible for clients to do the same.
With the rapid urbanization of Nigeria, it is clear that sustainable buildings have the capacity to make major contributions to a more sustainable future in Nigeria, and are cornerstones for securing long-term environmental, economic and social viability.

What are some of the challenges the company faces by moving towards more sustainable building solutions?

Sustainability is and has been part of Julius Berger’s corporate culture for years and is not limited to the building solutions we offer. Thus, we challenge ourselves to operate sustainably each and every day across all our operations.
Julius Berger’s challenge in regards to “green” buildings is to maintain robust knowledge regarding the latest processes to ensure our solutions are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle.
We manage this challenge through continuous training of staff and our strong global partners who provide know-how transfer and knowledge on best practice standards.
A challenge for the entire construction industry when it comes to sustainable construction is that it requires a long -term view, considering initial capital cost, against running costs of the structure.
While there may be a premium to realize“green” buildings, in the long-term, “green” buildings have been proven to deliver great value in regards to running costs and maintenance once the building is operational.to make major contributions to a more sustainable future in Nigeria, and are cornerstones for securing long-term environmental, economic and social viability.

Is sustainable design the future for Nigeria, where does Julius Berger fit in?

Sustainability in many parts of the world has become fundamental to good business. Julius Berger believes that as a leading economy in Africa, Nigeria is no different.
Furthermore, the country is a hot spot for both domestic and international investors, many of which are interested in lasting solutions, which deliver tangible long-term value, without harmful impact to both the environment and its citizenry.
We expect that along with the continuous growth of Nige ria’s economy, the demand for sustainable buildings that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient will grow as well.
Julius Berger looks forward to remaining the leading provider of “green” buildings, in order to offer clients sustainable solutions that have both environmental and economic advantages.

Does Julius Berger have any immediate plans for more “green” buildings?

That depends on our clients. If a client is interested in “green” buildings, we are immediately ready to offer a sustainable solution and deliver on our client’s needs.
To lead by example, we ensured that the new head office building of our subsidiary PrimeTech Engineering and Design Nigeria Ltd. was designed and built to qualify for green building certification.
Sustainable design and construction is not only an additional service we offer our clients, it is a very relevant and real aspect to our operations within the Julius Berger group.
